What does it mean to be a gifted child? The truth is there is no one definition of giftedness. Often the term is used to identify students who perform ahead of their classmates on placement tests. However, the percentage or number of gifted children in a given class, school, or district is often more a function of the available funding than objective criteria. Thus a student may be identified as gifted in one program and not in another. Mensans come in all ages. There is no junior level of Mensa. Youth members are just as welcome as adults and most of our activities are family friendly. Youth members are entitled to all the rights and benefits of adult members. In Mensa, the criteria for membership for children is the same as the adult criteria, a score in the top 2% of the population on a standardized intelligence test. However, the Mensa-administered test is only applied to those applicants who are 14 years-of-age or over. Younger potential mensas must qualify by submitting “other evidence”. Mensa accepts over 2000 different standardized tests for qualification. Feel free to contact our gifted children coordinator for more information. HoIM is beginning a campaign to recruit new youth members. By increasing our numbers, we will be better able to provide activities geared toward gifted children. So, check out the resources to the right, encourage your gifted kids to submit prior evidence of a qualifying score, and help us build Heart of Illinois Mensa into an oasis of friendship and interesting activities for our area gifted children. |
